“The river of his destiny and his magnificent obsession- the mighty Brahmaputra, affectionately called the Bura Luit by the Assamese people, the great river of Assam, its preserver and its destroyer.” In his own words, the photographer - author Dr Debal Sen, lets his camera become the extension of his enchanted state, in depicting his journey through images and his powerful narratives in Brahmaputra - The Blood Red River, which is the second volume on the river.
The ethereal riverscapes captured in reds, blues and oranges, transport the viewer to the exact place, not through mere imagination but through a deep internal experience. The images and their descriptions provide a geographic route for the keen traveller. The shades of blue Himalayan foothills provide solace and the vast array of greens of tea gardens, joy. The endangered slow loris and the rare Assamese rhesus feature in the fauna ; avifauna covers a variety of ducks, eagles, glossy ibis, geese, herons. The tribes of the region appear in the book, to tell their tales of existence, not known by many – through their faces, their rituals, festivals, ancient relics and their intimate relationship with the river. Just when one is lulled into a familiar set of humans, Dr Sen introduces an image with ominous storm clouds, to shake up the psyche. Human habitat and scenes of extraordinary natural beauty are juxtaposed here with careful selection. The chapter on Kaziranga is simply exquisite, giving the reader perfect images of the inhabitants of the park. The narrative on Kamakhya will enlighten many who are interested to know about this form of the Devi. As will the photo narratives on Tantric traditions and Powa Mecca.
All the photographs are marvels – never possible for a human to see them with the bare eye, in those moments of miraculous glory.
