Mangroves – The Sunderbans Vol 1, is a book with photographs of the largest mangrove formation of the world. According to the photographer - author, Dr Debal Sen, it contains photographs ‘garnered over three decades’ depicting mangrove flora and fauna, rivers and banks in all seasons and all times of the day and night. The images present the reader with magical shades of green, blue, grey, white, tawny and luminescence through birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, vegetation and breathstopping waterscapes. There are morning mists, ethereal sunrises, blazing afternoons, torrential rain, ominous stillness, ever flowing rivers, poetic clouds, monochromes. Surprise and awe wait on every turn, specially the panoramic images covering two vast pages. One gets the chills while reading about the impending doom that may strike from some corner of the pitch dark night in the form of the man killing tiger, made even more real by the fabulous monochrome of the ghost of Dakshin Rai or read about the launch tossed like a paper boat mercilessly by the terrifying storm on the Matla.
